I’m glad you are here!
My name is Daryl Christensen and I’m excited for the opportunity to serve you in the State House Of Representives for District 9. What you’ll get with me is a common sense conservative mindset, that believes in a strong foundation.
South Dakotans build their lives and families around principles that reflect their beliefs in the freedoms that allow for quality education, thriving businesses, readily available and affordable health care, and access to the natural resources that abound in South Dakota.
I believe in the protection of life and our 2nd amendment rights. A listening ear is one of my greatest assets and I seek to gather solid information before reacting.
When elected, I will be returning to Pierre to represent District 9. In 2002 I was privileged to be elected by this district, District 9, to serve in the State House of Representatives for the 2003-2004 Legislative Sessions. While in the Legislature, I served on two committees, Health & Human Services and Local Government. In 2003 I was chosen to attend the Bowhay Institute for Legislative Leadership.
While I have many relatives who settled throughout South Dakota dating as far back as the late 1800’s, I was raised on a farm in rural Iowa. I began travelling to South Dakota In 1992 when Director of Development for American Baptist Homes to explore the possibility of developing a first of its kind retirement community now known as Trail Ridge at the intersection of I-29 & I-299. The lure of a strong economy, business based community and welcoming people soon drew my family of 5 to Sioux Falls. We moved to the east side of Sioux Falls in 1995. There my wife, Joy and I continued raising our three daughters and are proud to say that all three received degrees from the University of Sioux Falls. We have since added three sons-in-law and 9 grandchildren.
I have spent my professional career building and owning businesses, largely working in the commercial, residential and agricultural areas of development. As director for American Baptist Homes of the Midwest, I developed continuum of care campuses in 11 states working “from the ground up” as I met with State and Local Government, secured land and oversaw the projects to their completion. I spent a portion of my career as Vice President of a large building company working mainly in the agricultural communities in South Dakota and four surrounding states. As a 25 year member of the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire, I have served on multiple committees and led as Vice President and subsequently President of the Association locally. I’ve also actively served as State Board President for the Home Builders and lobbied in Pierre on behalf of the profession. I retain that membership along with my present position of Business Development for Fireplace Professionals, Inc. and continue serving on the Legislative Committee for the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire.
Early life lessons.
At the age of 12, when I was working the farm with my single mother, she had the wisdom to sell the farm and move to town. She purchased a push lawn mower for me and she went to work as an aide at the Baptist Home in Harlan, IA. She secured enough lawns to keep me busy mowing until she would return home each day. The deal was that I had to buy my own gas, maintain the mower with my proceeds and pay her back for the mower over time. I kept the deal and learned about responsibility, entrepreneurship and the value of doing a job right the first time.
Those early lessons continued to guide me throughout my adult life influencing my career choices as I invested in and gave back while serving on local boards, owning businesses, attending and serving in my church and raising my family.
THANK YOU.
“This community has afforded me continued professional and personal growth within the corporate and small business settings as I have throughout my career path as owner of a construction company, VP of a largely agriculture based building company, and now Dealer and Outside Business Development for a local fireplace company. It is my strong desire to use the experience life has given me to represent the people of District 9 in our South Dakota Legislature. I would greatly appreciate your consideration and vote that would enable me to work for you!”
